Getting your feet wet with Liturgical Living

I really love the idea of liturgical living. I think it’s so fun to make strawberries-en-flambe to celebrate the Sacred Heart of Jesus, to remember the Saints through food and dessert and to change the color of the placemats with each liturgical season. It keeps things exciting and reminds my kids of the rich history of the church and the Saints that have gone before us.

But it is overwhelming.

There are over 10,000 saints, 8 liturgical seasons and 17 holy days and solemnities alone. It feels as if you could never do it all, so why even try to do any of it. But whether you do one baked good a month or go all in, the fruits of liturgical living in your home are so rich.

There are so many women doing good and beautiful work in sharing the good news with Liturgical Living, you never need to feel alone! Many of them recommend starting with just celebrating Name Days and Baptism Days, some suggest starting with Solemnities and Holy Days. If you’re like me, you may just start with things that catch your eye and fit in your schedule. I tend to do a lot in Advent and settle into celebrating bigger feasts and Solemnities the rest of the year. Whatever you do, take it slow and make it work for your family.

If you want to tackle living liturgically, here are 4 of the best resources to start with!

Catholic All Year

Kendra Tierney is a pioneer for Liturgical Living! Her book the Catholic All Year Compendium is the mother’s almanac for all things regarding Liturgical Living. She’ll walk you through celebrating the Saints and all of the Solemnities and Feast Days in a fun, family-oriented way. From celebrating St. Joseph by eating spaghetti without plates to toasting marshmallows to observe the martyr St. Joan of Arc – it is never a dull moment when you take Kendra Tierney’s lead. Her company, Catholic All Year, also provides Liturgical Living Boxes that take all the guess work out of it for you.

Be A Heart

Be A Heart has provided my family with one of our all-time favorite Advent Traditions with Mary on the Mantel. A Catholic alternative to the popular Elf on the Shelf, Mary on the Mantel helps us prepare our hearts and our home for the arrival of Jesus, just as we would if we were welcoming a new baby into our home. Each Advent, Mary (and Joseph) travel around our home doing everything from reading scripture to folding laundry and drinking tea. My children love this tradition and it’s become one of the most meaningful Advent traditions. Additionally, Erica Tighe Campbell, owner and designer of Be A Heart, has authored the most straight forward and simple to use book on Liturgical Living. Living the Seasons: Simple Ways to Celebrate the Beauty of Your Faith Throughout the Year, is easy to read and a great beginners guide to Liturgical Living.
