St. Nicholas Day Gift Guide

St. Nicholas Day is a favorite in our house and it’s right around the corner!

St. Nicholas, Bishop of Myra, is known for tossing gold coins into the stockings of three poor sisters to pay for their dowries. His feast day is December 6th and is often celebrated with chocolate coins, oranges, and gifts in shoes or stockings. For more about St. Nicholas and why we celebrate his feast day (and how it fits into the whole Santa business) read here.

Coming off Thanksgiving and after rushing to get all our Advent ducks in a row, St. Nicholas day sometimes takes me by surprise. But this feast day is so special and can be such a highlight to the Advent Season. My kids love putting their shoes out in front of the fireplace on December 5th to see what goodies St. Nicholas will leave.

In my early years of celebrating this feast day, I tried to pick small gifts that fit in my kid’s shoes, but this really was a challenge for me. In recent years, I have used small gift bags, labeled with their names that are placed next to their shoes. The gifts I select have varied, but I usually try to give chocolate coins and 1-2 items. I’ve done Advent/Christmas books, activity books, Saint trinkets, new slippers, Christmas tree ornaments, and special socks.  I know some people who use St. Nicholas Day as an opportunity to give the gift of Christmas pajamas, another great way to celebrate!

See below for some of my favorite St. Nicholas gifts.
