In our area, many of our second graders are receiving the beautiful sacrament of reconciliation for the first time. Many Diocese are on different schedules, but here in the Archdiocese of Washington, First Reconciliation is usually received in the dark winter months, just before Lent, and First Holy Communion is celebrated shortly after Easter.

In an interview with National Catholic Register, Monsignor Esseff, an exorcist for the Diocese of Scranton, PA said “One confession is worth a hundred exorcisms.” The power of the sacrament of Reconciliation is one of the greatest gifts Jesus has made accessible for us. We should not take it for granted and we should celebrate it for our children.

It can be hard to figure out exactly how to celebrate this sacrament of initiation as it is so personal in nature. It’s not one that family general comes into town for (like First Holy Communion or Confirmation), but it is usually a quiet service with immediate family. In our house, we’ve decided to celebrate the day with a family meal at local restaurant and a small gift, usually something to enhance their prayer life and a note reminding them of the endless mercy available to them through our Lord.

In the past, I’ve stumbled through finding an appropriate gift, but these are the some of the best ideas I’ve come across. I hope they help you too!

May your child know the immense mercy and peace offered to each of us through this beautiful sacrament.
